Transform
Senior Show Exhibition
Summary
Transform was my individual Senior Show project for my capstone class, showcasing my best work and reflecting my identity as a designer.
Solution
Our group theme revolves around the life cycle of a phoenix, symbolizing growth and transformation through five stages: Survival & Work, Healing Biases & Past Experiences, Family & Community, Self-Actualization & Optimization, and Transcendence & Rebirth. Each member chose a stage to guide their work, connecting deeply with its meaning.
I chose Transcendence & Rebirth as my focus, resonating with its themes of renewal and transformation. This stage represents the culmination of growth, rising above challenges, and embracing a new, elevated version of oneself—a journey that mirrors my own creative evolution and perspective.
Artist Statement
Vulnerability is a familiar feeling that many often struggle with, paralyzing us from progressing and growing. Most commonly found in fear of change and leaving a comfortable space. However, growth and progress only happen more efficiently when you let go of the past and the things holding you back.
Growing up in a small conservative town has taught me about preserving culture and resistance to change. I made a conscious decision to start my college journey at a small and familiar college in La Crosse and later transferred to Winona State University. Unknown to many, continuing my education at a new school in Winona was a considerable risk, especially during a pandemic. Being in a junior-level class as a stranger online has made my anxiety worse and made me feel like I could not form a community.
My exhibition Transform illustrates my emotions throughout my journey, discovering an entirely new concept of growth from two perspectives: The before and after of my decision to accept change. Employing the various pre and post-photography techniques, I expressed how I felt blinded in the comfort of my hometown versus the exhilarating rewards after the extremely stressful challenge of coping with change. Staying in a position of contentment has prevented me from reaching my full potential. Having a great understanding of vulnerability from Brené Brown, I now realize being vulnerable is an essential part of creativity and how it will continue to lead me to new growth.
